when switching game modes the shading in my house gets messed up sometimes

Occasionally when i switch game modes (switch from survival to creative) most rooms in my house get super dark, the only parts that aren't dark are the blocks with light sources. Also if you leave the dark area your characters shading doesn't change until you've completely left the square, and when you do, the shading on your character changes at an instant with no transition.
