Unable to connect cross-play

On Thursday, 9/3/2020, my kids were able to play Minecraft on Windows 10 x64 with their friends who are on Xbox One X.  As of Friday, 9/4/2020, we've been unable to connect to each other's worlds.  We are able to see that we're online and playing Minecraft, but no matter who hosts the game, we cannot connect.  I have been in contact with my kids friends father and neither of us have changed anything with our network setups.  The only thing that stuck out was when I opened Minecraft on my machine, it popped up with the 1.16.40 hotfix message.  Is it possible this hotfix has affected cross-play connectivity?
