Can't hit mobs in 3rd Person mode

When I'm in 3rd person mode on survival than I can't hit mobs most of the time. I can hit/destroy blocks around and under the mob but I can't actually hit it until, cows, monsters, spiders, anything. I will occasionally hit something but most of the time I have to switch views before fighting anything.
