Microsoft account won't log in

I have repeatedly tried to sign into my Microsoft account to use realms on the switch however every time I try to log in it can take up to an hour of repeatedly signing in using the given code to say it is a success and I can safely close the window but when I click log in it only gives me another code.
Usually it will eventually connect but it is a waste of time to attempt to log In for so long every time I try to the point the game is near useless, it was bought by a friend as a birthday gift so I could play with them I have no use for the game unless I can connect to my Microsoft account. 
I have friends who play on Xbox and mobile none of who have this issue so I don't know if it is because I'm playing on switch or only recently got the game.

I look forward to hearing of some kind of solution for this issue otherwise there will be no point in purchasing any of the packs.
