Lava not placing in online worlds at a distance or while crouching.

When I'm playing skywars on a server (Hyperlands) it doesn't let me place lava when I'm at a distance from the block I want to place it on, I am still within the range but it won't let me place it. It's also the same with water and it's not the server since other people run into the same bug on other servers too. Thanks.
