Complete item lost on death

So I was playing normal Minecraft on my own and while I was building a statue o fell off it and die but whenni went to retrieve my items tbey were missing,they vanished and I tried leaving then enteri g the world again but nothing worked so now I lost full Inventory worth of goods including a very powerful weapon
