Multiplayer "client outdated"

When my friend and I went to play on eachothers new worlds, I tried to join his and it said "outdated client". The same thing occurred when he tried to join my world. We're both updated and we were playing together about 3 days ago with zero problems. How do I fix this and why is it happening?
