Crashes when I open a menu/chest/inventory

For the last day or so, every time I open a chest or menu or my inventory, minecraft freezes and I have to close it. It's happened when I was playing multiplayer and single player. What info can I give (and where can I find it) to help figure out what's going wrong? Thanks in advance for the help.
