With bed and slabs you can X-ray and find caves and stuff.

Dig down a bit, then put blocks around a 2x1 place. This border around it should be two and a half blocks high, use slabs. Close it in and have it so that if you were to place a bed your head would stick into the ceiling. Place the bed at your feet and you will be able to see the caves and stuff around you.
