Multiplayer not working

When my friends try to join my world it loads for a long time then says connection time ran out.
When I try to join them it lets me in but I can't do anything.

• the block breaking animation doesn't work
  -I can't pick up any blocks
• the game seems to think I'm in my spawn location even if I'm hundreds of blocks away
