Wooden slabs take a long time to mine using an axe but takes only a short time to mine with a pickaxe

Exactly as stated on the summary, the programming is wrong since it is a WOODEN plank why would it take a long time to mine using a axe, it is not stone so why is it faster to mine using a pickaxe?
