Client can place mid-air torches

Usually tapping on the underside of a block would either place it on the side of a block nearby (picture 1), or would do nothing. But if one joins a LAN world and does this, the torch floats in mid-air on the client's screen (picture 2), although appearing like it should (picture 1) to the host.
