Inability To Name/Customize Items With Command Blocks

   I attempted to name a sword using command blocks with the /give command for a map I was making; I had planned weapon names and everything. But I've searched all over the internet and have yet to find an actually working command for naming an item or giving it enchantments. It gives suggestions, when copying what I see on the internet such as 'Missing "[" on line 2 or object member name'. A bit vague. And I double check myself for grammatical errors and find none.
