Skins fail to load

When Minecraft loads up, a message appears at the top of the screen that says "failed to load character" and whatever slot number it's not loading in. None of the skin slots work and all say "reload" but can't be reloaded. Restarting Minecraft sometimes helps load the skins but it's not every time it helps.
