exiting cart I get trapped, die, or "jump" to unexpected places. also, the carts frequently get mostly buried in the block they run into at the end of the line.

What I expected to happen was, I would jump to exit the cart, and I would end up standing next to it. I would expect the cart to stop on the last rail section on the line (or even bounce back a bit) when it hit the block at the end.

What actually happened was, sometimes, when I jump out of the cart I would end up trapped in a hollow space BELOW the cart. One time there eas lava there and I died. Other times I have to pickaxe my way out. Other times I end up many (7?) blocks away, where, sometimes, I can't even see the cart.

At times, if I exit the cart while it's still moving, near the end of the track, or if I bump into a cart that is already there blocking the way, the empty cart will bury itself, almost entirely, in the block/wall at the end of the line. To get it out, I "destroy" it by hitting it with a tool (an axe seems to work the best).
