My diamond pickaxe with mending does not heal after getting XP

So I have a diamond pickaxe with mending I tried killing mobs at night to get some xp to heal my pickaxe but instead of healing my pickaxe the xp goes to the xp bar.
This happens to me with multiple other items as well.
