Pillar quartz cannot be placed sideways

This has been a problem for a long time.

How to duplicate: (see photo below)
Place 1 pillar quartz block down top facing ground.
Place 2nd pillar quartz block top facing side of first block.
The 2nd block should be shown as sideways showing horizontal lines.

No matter what I do I am not able to get the block to be placed sideways showing horizontal lines. Without this fix I can't make good looking garage doors. See second photo.
