Can't split screen or join multiplayer

Since we did the update the game has been slow, then it started to refuse adding the other joy-cons to multi play together. 
I looked it up but nothing is working. 
I have 1 Nintendo and 4 kids! 
this has to be fixed

ps I'm not sure of the affects version
