I tried to make gold ingots in survival but it didn't work.

When I found some gold ore in my minecraft survival world I went online to find out how to turn it into gold ingots. However, after I followed the instructions the gold ore still wouldn't smelt into ingots. I don't know if the info I acquired was wrong or not but I think its a bug in this edition. Please can you fix this.
