the commands /clear @a piston and /clear @a sticky_piston dont work

so I have a world that has command blocks.  I have a few command blocks that utilize the /clear command so people dont dupe on my world.  but recently it hasn't been working.  even if I manually type the command /clear piston or clear sticky_piston it doesnt detect the piston or sticky piston in the person inventory.
