Nether portals do not work

When entering a nether portal in survival, the game crashes.  I have confirmed this on one world, but this does not happen on other worlds.  The world is survival-only, and entering the portal in creative mode still crashes the game.  When the second player (in multiplayer) enters the portal, the issue becomes resolved
