Crimson stem being bugged

Crimson stem, when I place the number I have in my hot bar stays the same and the game doesn't register I've placed it, it shows it placed on the screen but when I place a block next to it it disappears, then it also gets destroyed instantly. I also can't use crafting bench whilst holding the glitched crimson stem. If I placed some of the glitched blocks then save and quit and relog the blocks aren't there.
