Wooden Pickaxe

So I was doing a Nether survival challenge where I go into creative to make a nether portal, go into the nether, break the nether portal, set my spawn point, and goes into survival mode and survive. I was in a warped forest and got some "warped stems" and made some warped planks out of them. I made sticks and a crafting table so that I could make wooden tools, but I couldn't.
