My stuff disappeared in seconds after I died in the nether

I was just outside of my nether portal when I accidentally hit a group of zombie pigman and got knocked into a corner and died. After a unusually long loading screen to get into the over world I rushed back to my stuff and all that was left was the sword that was in my hand.
