Minecraft stronghold issue

In my Minecraft world, I was following the eye of ender to find the stronghold and when the eye of ender reached to a point where it starts moving down, I dug down to find a stairway that leads to nothing and a hallway like room with dead ends. I dug around for a bit to look for the rest of the stronghold but I couldn't find anything so I went to create a new world with the same seed and went to creative to dig around more and after about a days worth of digging, I couldn't find anything. Please explain or help.
