When I am in my world and I wish to change or open my inventory it keeps on placing blocks and breaking items instead of interacting correctly

If I was to try and switch my invent to get wood I will instead drop my bucket of water, it frustrates me having to continously exit the game to just deal with the same thing, how am I gonna play a game where I can't even use my items correctly
