Gold ore is not smelting

Gold ore is not smelting in furnaces. I have tried in both normal furnaces and blast furnaces. I have tried using coal and wood. The gold ore just sits in the slot, the smelting arrow does not move, and the fuel is not used up. Other things smelt fine (iron ore and cobblestone both smelt normally).
