Not all blocks mine or place

When I am mining blocks, I all of the blocks mine on my screen but I start to suffocate and other players in my game say I'm inside a block. I can excavate a huge area but only actually mine some of the blocks. Same with placing blocks, most of the time it is fine but other times I can be placing a large amount of blocks and I'll see them all there but other people in the game will see spaces where I have not placed anything.
