Gold not smelting

So I was playing my survival which was started in the beta. I was mining materials to make equipment and armor. I smelted my iron and put in the gold and it wouldn't smelt. I tried food, stone, and more iron, and cooked. But the gold wouldn't smelt. I don't know is others have experienced this, but I recommend it is.
