Unable to smelt gold ore in a furnace

When trying to smelt gold ore in a furnace, the furnace will not activate. I have tried smelting un furnaces in different locations, in both blast and normal furnaces, and fed the ore through with a hopper and in all of those situations the furnace could not activate. It works for other ores and for food but not for gold ore
