Can't play multiplayer despite account settings allowing it

I am unable to join servers, realms, or multiplayer worlds because "my account is incorrectly set up" or I "do not have permission". Not am I able to add friends via the Minecraft app. I have checked all my privacy settings to allow joining multiplayer games multiple times, including when prompted by the Minecraft app.
