up/down control not working

Expected response: use up/down control to go up/down

Actual response: one tap or hold on control produces short jump up and then straight down again.

Unsuccessful solutions so far: delete, clear cache and reinstall MCPE; Turn off magnification setting under accessibility controls.

left/right and forward/backward controls respond as expected.
