Floating Sugar Cane

When harvesting sugar cane, sometimes the top most cane floats in the air rather than collapsing when a lower cane is chopped down. I harvested sugar cane on my farm that was originally 3 cane high. I broke the cane from the middle portion of the cane (the second cane block from both the top of the stalk and the bottom). I harvest around 30 stalks total and only 2 remained floating.
