Cannot farm beetroot, potatoes or carrots, and cannot milk cows

I can occasionally get carrots or potatoes from killing zombies, and beetroot seeds from tilling grass with the hoe, but when I plant them they do not grow - potatoes pop back out of the ground with a minute or two, and planted carrots and beetroot seeds just disappear.

Also, tapping and holding the bucket on a cow does not do anything - I cannot milk the cows at all.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plant carrots, potatoes or beetroot seeds
2. Wait
3. Potatoes pop out of the ground. Carrots and beetroots disappear.
