Crash when entering nether portal after two villages enter

I was moving two villagers through the nether to get them to a mushroom island.  After reaching the island, both of the villagers escaped and ran back into the portal to the nether.

 

I ran in to chase them, but the game would not load the nether and crashed in a white screen.
