Sync fail and game overwrite to previous save

On trying to sync game saves between two xbox one consoles that we are playing on, the sync sometimes fails and reverts to an older save, then on entering game to check the load as it sometimes works on entering game, it autosaves over hours of gaming to an old save. Unable to retrieve hours of gameplay. Happened a few times now. Getting fed up trying to fix the problem. Game practically unplayable. Need a way to access up to date saves if the data corrupts and saves over current progress!!!
