Lead duplicates when leaving game

I used a lead to leash my horse onto a fence post in survival mode and then immediately closed Minecraft - on my return, the lead was in my inventory, but the horse was still leashed to the fence post. I don’t think the lead ‘replaced’ another item as has been reported in the past.
