It won't let us use our own custom skins

When me and my friend plays and we try to use our custom skins it lets us but It shows both of us as hers or both of us as mine. Even when we try on a different map it still does the same thing, but if we are in a different map with only 1 player (me or her) It shows our skins until we join each other.
