Repeaters don’t get power from other side of blocks

When you power Redstone in the other side of a repeater it will not get powered...

What I expected to happen: it gets powered

What happened: it remained unpowered

How to recreate: place a repeater in front of a block.
Place Redstone behind the block that doesn’t point into the block.
Power the Redstone.
Observe the repeater.
