Can't Name and Place Blocks

I tried to name (using an anvil) a banner to place down in my world but misplaced it. When I went to pick it back up, the banner no longer had the name I gave it. I tested this on blocks as well, thinking maybe it was just the banners, but it affects full blocks as well.
