Weird stair and slab lighting glitch

When using stairs or single slabs as a roof, it makes the lighting very weird. Its really bright and the only way to get rid of it is to place a full block/2 slabs. First photo (lighter) is just stairs. 2nd photo is full blocks under the stairs. Same time of day.
