Fell from great height on perfect Elytra landing

Landed perfectly on platform. Barely had enough speed to get up to the necessary height. Died from fall damage. All items lost. None on platform or in water around. Found pickaxe in a tree. Elytra killed me for falling down one block with no momentum. WTH?
