Can't connect other players with split screen

When I open the world with cross-platform multiplayer turned and I try to connect another player using another user account or by hitting skip, it says they need a nintendo switch online membership in order to play. I don't know if this is your fault or nintendo's fault, so I apologize
in advance if this is nintendo's fault and not yours.
