Observer not detecting netherwart growth

Unfortunately, observers are not detecting any growth stage for nether wart. only the initial planting. Tested by hooking up an observer to a red stone lamp and cranking up random tick speed. the lamp lit for other plants as they advanced through their stages. Nether wart remained dark.
