Flying Machine goes down randomly

I was looking for a flying machine for my world and I tested out a couple of designs and noticed that none of them worked. I was confused at first but then I realized why. Pistons/Observers don’t have a set order to fire so the vertical flying machine sometimes goes up and sometimes goes down, seemingly at random. This completely breaks all flying machines and redstone if things have a random order of firing.
