Tick Lag

I was playing in my minecraft world and was mining obsidian, And when I broke my final piece the game lagged meaning I could fall into the lava under the obsidian I broke and than the water spread onto the lava turning it into obsidian giving me no escape route, And by the time I thought to break the block above my head it was too late
