Block Breaking Animation/Texture Reseting

I've been playing on a realm and recently when breaking blocks the animation/texture for the progress of removing the block resets. For example, I start breaking a melon with my hand, the animations gets about half way through and then resets. It just continues in an endless loop unless I use a faster tool such an axe. So, I can't really break anything with my fist because of this bug.
