Pictures disappear after trying to put them on wall

I made 3 paintings. I put them up on my brick house and I broke them one by one to try to get different pictures. They all disappeared from my inventory. The same thing happened when I broke wood from a tree to make the pictures. I destroyed two trees and out of 7 blocks I only got 3 pieces of wood from them. They are not on the ground or in my inventory
