Crafting table not crafting but taking ingredients

For example, last night I had ingredients for 4 cakes. The first cake was successful, set cake down in world, then tried to make the next 3. All the ingredients needed for the next three cakes were gone after attempting to craft (INCLUDING) the buckets themselves (buckets of milk) and there were no cakes in inventory or near crafting table. Tried to make a chest also, took wooden planks, but there was no new chest.
