Gravel act like quick sand

I was in a mine shaft, there at some place gravel is on ground and stone on roof and then gravel under my feet suddenly act like quick sand and i died due to drowning and all of my xp and my some items lost . When i go back there , I get my weapons back but my dimonds and other stuff lost.
